On the set of, "The Promise," the actors with their different views on customs, religions, and values were thrown together. If one tries to have his way, he will meet with opposition for sure. We learned to study, give and take and honor the other's views for the goal of completion of this movie. We had to find satisfactory answers for each other. In doing so, though the path was narrow, we were able to walk together.
As we repeated this over and over again, I started to feel strongly, that in order to get along in the foreign country, I knew that this was the reality. This is the way the story line for the movie goes. This came about during the time we were confined to our hotel because of the riot caused by the booing of the Soccer games.
<The part in the "White Countess" during the shooting of the "The Promise" .... and it was about a Japanese spy who was active in China during the Manchurian incident.>
This definitely was destiny. The great combo of for "The Remains of the Day", Kazuo Ishiguro the writer and James Ivory, the director, will repeat with the new Ishiguro's story, the main character is Ralph Feinnes, on top of these, I thought of a Japan-born Japanese actor for the part of a spy. It could be a dangerous part for me since I portray an enemy of China, still I feel it is very important to have the opening of this movie in Japan.
<Not just acting as an actor but he wants to become the bridge between Japan and the overseas countries.>
Being surrounded by the staff, who have never worked with the Japanese, I felt the pressure of "what if I fail now (not only I, but other following Japanese actors or actresses) will never be able to appear (act) again." And if I thought, "Oh, it was OK" I still wanted to push myself harder. I am grateful for the good fortune of being born in the era where it's possible for one to go overseas. I want people to know that I push forward even it is one step at a time.
<He pushes forward feeling the pressure of needing to pave the way for future Japanese actors/actresses, so that they will be able to work overseas more easily.>
I want to be proud of being a Japanese, I want to be proud of my country. The movie has the possibility of contributing to that end. As often as we intercourse with the overseas, we must produce great things, that is uniquely Japanese as we stand on this earth. That was my thought as I looked upon Japan from afar.
To be continued ...
